Writing a Nonfiction Book on Tuesdays in April at River House
with Bobbi Linkemer

Are you interested in writing your own nonfiction book but are unsure how to even start? Then this class is for you.
Supplies needed:
pen and/or pencil
paper and/or laptop
Content:
1. Planning — The heart of planning is a book proposal that would explain to a traditional publisher what this book is about, how it will benefit the reader, and why it should be published. The planning step will go on during the entire course and should produce a solid beginning to a formal book proposal.
2. Putting ideas into words (writing) — Two things are important: 1. An author must really care about his or her subject matter and want to share it with others in a way that moves them, changes them, entertains them, or teaches them something. 2. Writing is the most time-consuming part of this process. It requires organization, self-discipline, mastery of the English language, and openness to critiques by an editor.
3. Professional partners — This is about all the people who will play a role in some aspect of a book. Very few people can, or would even want to, do everything that must be done to take a book from concept to completion, especially if completion includes marketing. This requires a team of people, each with an area of specialization and all focused on a single outcome — making the book a success.
4. Publishing — The step that converts digital files or plates into printed, bound pages between two covers. In today’s world, publishing also includes ebooks and audio books, which demand special skills and different professional partners. The more authors understand the available publishing options, the more they can choose the best one for their needs
5. Promotion — This is the way an author lets readers know the book exists and why and how to buy it. This should not be the point at which an author starts thinking about how to market the book. In fact, the time to consider promotional strategy is during the planning phase. A proposal will contain the steps to help a publisher promote the book, or the author will assume full responsibility for doing it if the book is self-published.
Rather than creating and distributing handouts, Bobbi recommends the book on which this course is based: How to Write a Nonfiction Book (7th Edition): From planning to promotion in 6 simple steps by Bobbi Linkemer and Peggy Nehmen
Class sessions will run on Tuesdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25 from 11:45 to 1:45 at River House, 179 Marine Street, St. Augustine 32084.
